My recent paintings of Timeless Landscapes and Natural Landscapes are intended to be thought-provoking. In these works I have endeavoured to more than scratch the surface, to capture the essence of some of Scotland's most iconic places. These special landscapes embody layers of history and significance that resonate down the centuries. The subjects of the painting are not merely gorgeous landscapes. They are real places with real stories. Their special quality derives from their aesthetic appeal combined with their cultural, environmental and/or spiritual associations. I prefer not to be too prescriptive or illustrative as the special connection to each place is different for everyone, not least the people who live or belong there. Over time, the inhabitants of a landscape have shaped it as their environment, in turn, has shaped them.
