Isle of Jura, the Western Isles of Scotland
The Corrievreckan Whirlpool is the 3rd largest in the world. It is located in the Sound of Jura between the North end of the Isle of Jura and the Isle of Scarba, in the Inner Hebrides.
At High tide, the sea churns and froths around an underwater sea stack in the narrow channel. This treacherous natural phenomenon was once declared un-navigable by the Royal Navy.
There are many legends associated with it and to explain its origins. In one version it was the home of the God or Witch of Winter who could create powerful storms. It was also named for Vreckan, the Nordic Prince who attempted to win the hand of a fair maiden by navigating it. There is a more reliable story about George Orwell narrowly escaping tragedy there.
