The ancient stone steps of the broch at Dun Carloway on the Isle of Lewis, managed by Historic Environment Scotland. The building was in use by a local farmer for storage into the twentieth century. Brochs are unique to Scotland. They were communal defensive dwellings that were in use from the Iron Age. There are remains of 500 brochs across the East and North of Scotland.
