An abandoned croft - COMING SOON

Project type

An acrylic painting on board, 84 X 31cm, unframed as yet

Date

May 25

Location

Sutherland, Scotland

A small stone ruin, the shell of an old croft near Sandwood Bay in NW Sutherland.
The map identifies it as Rebecca's Bothy, presumably it was used as a hiker's bothy before the roof collapsed. An old map of 1830 shows four croft houses named Sandwood. Each one would have been home to a large family and animals. There are walls remaining and ridges showing old dykes that would have divided the separate riggs cultivated by each croft. The people who lived there would have been cleared off the land by their landlord (the Duke of Sutherland) at some point to make way for sheep. The ruin is not one of these but a later dwelling for the shepherd or farmer who replaced them.
